Program/Volunteer Coordinator (part-time)


  • Select and take shelter pets to live and pre-recorded news segments at various news stations
  • Develop, coordinate, and manage community outreach efforts including but not limited to fundraisers with local businesses, adoption weekends at local stores, parades, and collaborative events with other non-profits
  • Schedule trips to local schools to provide educational presentations and programs
  • Schedule group visits to the shelter including educational visits and shelter tours
  • Plan and present Sit, Stay, Read Program at the shelter to promote responsible pet ownership
  • Select and take shelter pets on animal therapy visits for the Love on a Leash Program as well as expanding the program to reach more community members
  • Schedule, plan, set-up, and oversee birthday parties
  • Assist with special event planning including Woofstock and Halloween Party.
  • Attend special events hosted/planned by the shelter
  • Assist in keeping the website, Petfinder, and social media accounts up to date with adoptable pets
  • Facilitating volunteer orientations/training volunteers
  • Plan volunteer picnic and awards ceremony
  • Responsible for staffing volunteers at various events
  • Prepare and email monthly volunteer newsletter
  • Work Tuesday-Saturday.  Saturdays are required.


  • Self-starter, initiating activities within the framework provided/developed with minimal supervision
  • Proven experience working with the public, developing and maintaining excellent relationships to support goals/mission.
  • Ability and desire to work in a fast paced, changing environment
  • Professional public image
  • Experienced animal handling skills preferred
  • Experienced with Microsoft Office programs
  • Excellent oral, written, and organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Public Speaking skills
  • Able to work flexible hours, which will include evenings, weekends, and maybe even some holidays
  • Able to lift and carry animals, equipment, and supplies up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to obtain PA Child Clearances and Background Check upon hire
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Passion for issues relating to animal welfare
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Must have experience working for a non-profit organization


  • working with strong cleaning agents on wet surfaces
  • possible exposure to potentially harmful chemicals and drugs
  • possible exposure to dangerous, diseased, frightened, and injured animals
  • frequent movement, including but not limited to standing, walking, stooping, carrying heavy loads, movement of cages, restraining active animals, and operation of motor vehicle

Adoptions Counselor (part-time)


  • Screening potential adopters, reviewing applications, and processing paperwork.
  • Observing interactions between pets and potential adopters.
  • Explaining contracts, health records, and educating adopters about proper vet care and training.
  • Scheduling appointments for pets to be surrendered to the shelter.
  • Completing and maintaining intake paperwork, stray paperwork, cage cards, and updating records.
  • Processing adoption fees, retail sales, and donations.
  • Answering phones, walking dogs, taking photos of adoptable pets, updating social media, and miscellaneous custodial duties.


  • Minimum of a High School Diploma
  • Two years in customer service, animal-related, and/or non-profit experience.
  • Excellent customer service skills are a MUST!
  • Must work well with the public, and have the ability to problem solve while working in a fast-pace setting.
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and must work effectively with a team.
  • Must have strong administrative skills, be highly organized, motivated, enthusiastic, and remain flexible under pressure.
  • Must have the ability to manage time effectively, prioritize, and pay attention to detail.
  • Must have strong computer skills and be able to learn quickly.
  • Must be available to work Saturdays.

Cattery Attendants (part-time)

The Erie Humane Society is seeking an experienced animal care attendant to join our team in cattery. 

The ideal candidate must be compassionate, detail oriented, motivated and dedicated to providing an exceptional quality of care to our shelter cats. Must have prior experience with animal care. Must be a team player with a demonstrated ability to work well with others. Must have excellent customer services skills. Applicant must have a flexible schedule and be available to work weekends, evenings and holidays.

Animal Care Attendants are key members of our team with responsibilities including, but not limited to, ensuring the health and safety of all animals in our care, cleaning cat kennels, feeding & administering medication as directed, maintaining cleanliness of all animal kennels and animal care areas,maintaining accurate records, and effectively communicating details with management and other departments within the shelter.
